For me, it’s the season of the can

My favorite fig protection devices are these cans. Birds and squirrels are my big problem and I try not to let them taste a ripe fig. Squirrels usually give the green ones a taste, but that stops quickly. I usually only have 20 to 30 figs that are nearly full ripe so I make that many cans up before the season. If a fig ripens too much and falls off its stem, it will be in the can, not on the ground.
The steps (L to R) 1) nip drainage holes in the rim around the bottom of the can 2) cut the can thru the hole in the top, down the side and across the bottom, making sure to cut both rims on the top and bottom 3) make multiple cuts in the top and bottom so that sharp points are bent outwards (keeps sharp edges from abrading the fig stem and looks intimidating) 4) use a thin strip of duct tape extending from one side around the stem and the attached to the other (with the target fig inside the can).
When finished it looks like a can attached to the stem with multiple sharp points on either end.
