Finally got my garlic planted

Do any of you have problems with squirrels digging them up after you’ve planted? I have to cover the soil with chicken wire or hardware cloth until they sprout in the spring to keep those little (expletives) from digging up the cloves and making a mess
Which type of garlic do you plant? I never have squirrel problems with garlic.....tulip bulbs on the other hand have to protected.....

Garlic can be grown very successfully down to zone 2 or 3. It's an amazing crop. I got all my initial garlic seed from a guy in Manitoba.

He has a partner farm in the US that sells most of the same types. I tried some artichoke types and they never did well for me. I think It may have been because they harvest earlier than the others but I'm not sure. I got a lot of splitting in them.

I'm growing Music and another one he has, Italian Purple that I swear has the aroma of Mortadella. They both do very well for me.

My garlic seems to really like chicken poop.

It could be squirrels but I always assumed it was my neighbors cats. I put a layer of wood chips over my mulch and that seems to be working so far.

That's a nice crop! I grow Italian Purple as well, and Russian Red, and Italian softneck and never had squirrel problems.....I always thought that they don't like the smell.....One time I recall having excess mushroom manure in my soil one and the squirrels ripped up my garlic bed to get at it....never bought that soil mix again....

I keep telling myself to get some hogs hahaha. I was listening to a Joel Salatin audiobook and he said black walnuts have bumper crops like every 5 years, this year was crazy for them and even my oak trees rained down acorns this year.
In my native state of Connecticut we always knew when we were going to have a bad winter by the amount of acorns on the ground and it always turned out true.

I don’t think they have any interest in the garlic. I think they’re just digging for nuts and in the process make a big mess. They get into my tree pots as well. At long as the plants are established they don’t do much damage…. When it’s seedlings or the buried garlic…… it’s very irritating

This post reminded me that I still need to plant my garlic. I have a bunch of elephant, some porcelain, and 1 head of music that I keep neglecting to plant. Hopefully this weekend. This is my first year doing elephant garlic and I am pretty pumped for it.

What’s elephant taste like compared to regular garlic? I’ve always wanted to try it. Definitely looks cool!

Honestly the taste is pretty comparable to regular garlic, maybe a little more mild, it’s just huge. I prefer the porcelain for flavor. I think just the novelty of it being huge is what’s got me. You do need to space it out a lot more, 11in instead of 4in. If you want I can try to send you some. I’d just have to take a look into what I have to do to ship to Canada.

11in.... Wow! I usually my porcelain using my fist... Those must be some big bulbs. I bet they're amazing roasted... I'm thinking maybe pickle them whole?

You can ship garlic to Canada. It just can't have any soil, roots or green foliage. At least that's what I'm told. No worries though.... It's too late for me to get them in the ground this year anyway. I'm sure I can find some next season. Appreciate the offer though.
