Fig Propagation Methods

So far the figpop and clear plastic cups have worked well. I just like to see visible results rather than just guess if the cuttings have roots.

I'm pretty new at this but here are my thoughts.

My first round, I did the on top of sand method. I didn't like it with bottom heat because all the moisture would condensate on the container and the cutting would look dry. I would need to mist them more often. I eventually did it without bottom heat. You need to up pot it when they root. If they bud before rooting, the bud is more likely to rot and accumulating it to regular humidity is a bit of work. Upside of this method is the bottom of less lightly to rot, is less work initially and I didn't need to parafilm the top. It's pretty quick to wash the cuttings, apply hormone and put on top of sand. I think it's also easier to up pot from red cups to 5gal pot than fig pops.

My second round, I prerooted it on top of sand for a bit over a week. I think this allows it to callus and likely to rot. This allows me some time before I have time to work on them. Then I made fig pops. I intend being these back to San Jose to give to family and friends. It's harder to fly with growing cuttings in a red cup. I think the fig pop method requires more work up front but it's more hands off. You can more easily use bottom heat without worrying and them drying out. I feel they are harder to up pot without the root ball falling apart.

There's also the tree pot fig pot hybrid method that uses a tree pot and bag. I couldn't find quality tree pots for cheap so I didn't do this method. This is probably the best method but costly.

For my mulberries and wax jambu, I tried a red cup with no holes and surand wrap over the soil. I plan to remove the surand wrap and cut a hole for drainage later. I think this is similar to the tree pot fig pop hybrid method. I would have tried this with the figs but I only had red cups. If I had clear cups that were 18-24 oz, I would have tried it. It was hard to tell the process when you put them in red cups. I think you will lose some moisture with the surand wrap top. I didn't have bags big enough to go around the red cups.

I think they all their pros and cons. Sand method is probably the easiest as long as the top doesn't bud out before it roots. I wonder if you can pot directly in a 5gal pot outdoors if it roots before budding out.

The figpop and cup method do require the extra step to up pot to a 4x9 but I usually start propagating later in the season so I can just up pot to a larger pot and placed outside in the shade for acclimation purposes. You can put rooted cutting in the pot but you'll need to provide cover when it rains. Putting it in a greenhouse would be ideal because the warmth and rain protection will give the cutting a better chance of survival and growth.

I'm partial to this technique. But mostly because it's my technique and my video.
I just watched your video and it was GREAT! I have no idea how I didn’t see this when you posted but sure glad I found it today. I like rooting in tree pots. I enjoyed your video. I just gave you a 👍 and I subscribed to your channel. Look forward to seeing your next video. You deserve a 5 star rating.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
