Field work

So I’ve been clearing some grown up family land and went today to work some before the rain. Last year I had a friend give me two small pawpaw trees. I took them there and planted at the pawpaw patch. Two spots, trying to help diversification and pollination.

I also checked up on some of the pear grafts I did earlier. Ayer’s, Comice, Kieffer, Chojuro and Bartlett all grafted to Bradford pear. Multiple trees and locations of each variety. I also did an old pear tree from my buddies family’s homestead. We aren’t sure the variety but those died. I will need to collect Scion this year when dormant and try again.

I checked on some of the persimmon grafts I did last weekend and too early to tell but one looks promising.

Then it was fire up the weed eater and go, go, go!!! Widening paths and clearing sections with briars everywhere. Got caught in the rain so had to run. Hopefully before long I can get my chainsaw and chipper there and really go to work. So far I have to hike in. Be good to drive in. Over 20 acres, I’m gonna need better equipment…lol. But here is my field and work in progress. Hoping to get some mulberries and figs planted soon.

It’s not mine. It’s technically my mother’s land. It’s been in our family for a long time. I think my great grandfather purchased most of it. Was a working farm and gets split as it’s passed down to family. Hopefully this section will be mine one day. I too look to pass it on to my daughters except as an orchard instead of a grown up field.

Update for today. Looks like something dug up one of the pawpaws I planted last weekend. I stuck it back in the hole and kicked dirt back over it but I’m not expecting much. Darn it.

The other pawpaw looks great as well as all the pear grafts. And the Fuyu persimmon grafts appear to be taking, yippee!!!

Long day working clearing field yesterday. Walked back in the woods and did some exploring. I found another pawpaw patch, red mulberry trees and lots of native persimmons! I’m excited even though most are way larger than I’d prefer but they are wild growing in our woods. I ate a couple of the persimmons that weren’t damaged or already nasty. They tend to splat when they fall from the trees plus critters, etc.

Went back over to field to work yesterday and just enjoyed walking the paths I’d made this last year. Beautiful day and fall changes the landscape. Nice not having grass to my waist. Anyway while walking around I noticed several buck rubs and one on my Chojuro pear graft tree! 😡

I eventually went to work and started clearing an area I’m planting figs in this spring. It’s an area where rocks were dumped when the hayfields were cleared many years ago and was very overgrown. I figured the figs should grow fine there with the rocks.

I’ll go back and clean up better and cut everything shorter when I can spray with brush killer to keep from coming back. I cut all those trees and they were hanging from the vines which made removing extremely difficult. I had to yank, pull and drag them out and then cut vines best I could. Told my wife it was like Spider-Man went crazy out there. I eventually will have that whole section cleaned and plant something in since they don’t mow it for hay.

Especially with just a chainsaw and weed eater with brush cutting head. I do have a chipper to chip up the trees. I sort of enjoy the work but I’m feeling it today.
