fall grafting thoughts?

I'm in zone 9b, so several months until a frost, if we get one at all.  I'm wondering about doing some grafting now (October), so the grafts have a better start in the spring.  The idea being that if the grafts take, they won't grow this fall, but will heal up and be ready to grow in the spring.  I would take the scions from some of my potted trees, already lignified, and graft them onto in ground trees.  I will probably try a few types of grafts, but chip budding seems like a good choice at this point.  I've seen a number of youtube videos that seem to suggest this works, but haven't heard from anyone in the real non-youtube world.
Anybody have any thoughts or recommendations on this? I would appreciate any feedback.  Thanks.

@"richbbfigs"#158 . Hello neighbor welcome to Figfanatic.com . I live in Berkeley CA right by the University. I'd love to see you do some of your October grafting if you don't mind an audience sometime. I'm running about 220 fig trees including 30 autumn fig pops. Please keep us updated on your Autumn grafts. Also if you like feel free to come visit my home Orchard in Berkeley. After all we're just down the street from one another.

I can't really speak for your climate being on the other side of the country, I would think you may have enough time for them to set.
Chip bud is probably the easiest graft to do...though I haven't tried a ton of different ways.
I am interested to see them though and how they do before your area cools down.
I'm sure that will slow the growth quite a bit.
Look forward to your follow up.

You’ll have a lower success rate but it’s possible for the graft to semi-take if you have enough sunlight and heat to keep the leaves on. I’m in SoCal and had about 50/50 chance grafting onto potted rootstock If I did around this time using cleft or W&T. In ground might have better results due to constant soil temps and more energy.

@"richbbfigs"#158 The answer is yes, but I need to check with my gardening partner. Since I am handicapped it would be better if we both were available. @"GilaMonster"#153 you're going to stay warmer longer then Orinda CA. Hope you try that graft. Please keep us updated. Also Dave Wilson nurseries when do they do all that bud grafting? What time of year.?? I believe it's still pretty cold when they do it.
