Dragon Fruit in Florida

Just returned from a 7 day adventure trip with my son to Florida. We stayed in Homestead...I love driving by the fields of fruit trees, and dragon fruit, and easy to drive to the Keys to fish and do some herping in the Glades.
So we stopped at 'Robert is Here', I'm sure alot of you know this place. And for the experience...I bought a Dragon fruit to eat. It was nearly 18.00, and I'm not talking a plant, a FRUIT. Robert cut it up for us , swearing it would be the best flavor we had ever had in a dragon fruit. It wasn't lol. Just wanted to share. I also managed to grab up some cuttings from Dragon fruits that had been whacked off in the field and were laying in the mow line...

I can buy them here but I imagine it’s like figs because the ones for the store are never nearly as good as what I’m told they’re like locally grown. Any I’ve ever bought are dry and husky. The ones in your pic look juicy!

It was a very tourist known fruit stand, so everything was too pricey. I mean, almost 18.00 for one dragonfruit ? but we wanted the experience, and to taste a different one. The ones we grow are white flesh and taste like a cross between a strawberry and a kiwi .

I'll take strawberry/kiwi.... The ones in the store here are about $10, and they taste like cardboard

What an awesome trip that must have been and as far as dragon fruits go it's one of my favorites however, if you buy them here in the store there flavor is almost non-existent.

I’m headed home from SW Florida now and regret not buying a local dragon fruit. I’ve tried them from the supermarket, and the flavor wasn’t great.

I visited Fruit Scapes on Pine Island near Cape Coral and had a great time. I picked up some Black Sapote and Sapodilla to take home as well as a 3-gallon pink guava tree.
IMG_4064.jpegPrices seemed reasonable—the guava tree was only $40 which is cheap compared with the online sellers.
IMG_4095.jpeg They are a nursery and a fruit market so they grow a lot of the produce there. Their nursery is so big that they used a golf cart to take me to the guavas to pick one out that would fit in my luggage.

They’re very nice too—I’d recommend stopping by if you’re in the area. Check out their website here: https://fruitscapesllc.com/
