Desert King - Excellent Breba

Not gonna lie but Desert King actually makes great brebas!

Rivaled many of my other figs main crop and honestly always thought D.King would make "good" tier flavored figs.

It just started to spoil but didn't taste spoiled (I removed the defect/rot on it) and really enjoyed it.

You want an early fig that's tasty - get yourself Desert King.20260519_154823.jpg20260519_154842.jpg20260519_155121.jpg20260519_155422.jpg20260519_155710.jpg20260519_155642.jpg

Only capri I have at the moment is GXY and I freely admit that I know jack about them.

I would be thrilled if someone in Figlandia would fill a birthday card with some good pollen and mail it to me.... ;) I mean, sending an envelope with a powdery substance to someone through the mail... What could possibly go wrong?

Spoke up right on time.

My Girsh is ripening Profichi atm - most are still pre-ripe and I could definitely mail put some pollen (sent a B-Day card with pollen out before).

I have yet to taste DK breba, but the tastiest breba I tried was Unk Prosciutto breba. I too thought it rivaled many main crop figs. Probably was better than many main crop figs. The only problem wa ls only got one breba fig. This season I got none and didn’t even prune my tree.

Does DK produce a lot of breba usually?

Hard to say so far - mine is about 3 ft tall and the other brebas on it are around 3-4 weeks behind this one.

Last year it did only produce one tho so maybe a maturity thing?

I've got about 140 ripening on an 8-year-old, 9 ft high inground tree. Last year squirrels got nearly all of them. I got maybe 10 or 15 figs off that tree. Funny thing is...squirrels don't mess with my other figs. Just Desert King.

That is , indeed, interesting that your squirrels don't touch other figs. Are we talking about different ripening times here? I am thinking that if DK is ripening at a different time relative to other figs, perhaps squirrels have a shortage of food during that time and resort to hunting for figs. My squirrels generally have no interest in my figs, but I have plenty of other fig thieves to deal with.

That could be it. My Desert King brebas normally ripen a month or two before any of the others, and will hopefully be ready in another week (assuming the squirrels don't get them first). I've set up flashing lights and am using repellent this year to keep them at bay. Wish me luck.
