When I started growing figs (not long ago), I believed that all honey figs ripened with a green skin and either white or a light blush on the inside. Last year, I had my first ripe Naples Dark Unknown (from Aaron Delmanto) and was very surprised to find out it was a dark colored honey fig (a purplish-brown on the outside and light amber on the inside). After doing some research, I learned that Zaffiro was similarly a dark colored honey fig, and then just yesterday, I found out that Vern's Brown Turkey was also a dark colored honey fig. So my questions are, how many different kinds of dark-colored honey figs are there? Are there any varieties that might ripen reasonably early for me here in Zone 7a (New Jersey) and could be a candidate in ground? What is your favorite and why, if you've grown them?
