Cuttings update

Here is an update on my progress. Overall, most of the cuttings I received from the forum as well as the few I purchased did very well.

A common challenge was from cuttings that pushed vigorous green shoots before rooting. Mostly wilted and desiccated at the end. These are the ones I lost: CdD Roja, CdD Grise, CdD Mutante, G. Royal, CLBC, Smith, Raspberry Latte, Balafi, Joualle Noir.

I am hoping to do better next season!

Again, many thanks to the forum for offering free cuttings to newcomers. And, special gratitude to @Figless , @FruitBrute , and @Endirenay for volunteering your time to collect, package, and ship them.

I look forward to growing my collection and, in time, contributing back in the same spirit of generosity.

@Miloush , and @Nyc_guy565 I am so sorry you both had losses, especially because they were all such wonderful varieties. Nevertheless it's sad, but true we almost all take some losses during propagation. On my first attempt I had 42 cuttings fail out of 125. Lol I might hold some sort of record. Mine was especially disconcerting because I ran a propagation cutting operation for several years, and believed I knew what I was doing. Ficus Carica presents some unique challenges that can cause you failures. Number one is that though it does form adventitious roots. It does this without forming appreciable amounts of non-differentiated cell matter, like most other plants do. So there is no need to scrape to the cambium layer. In fact in my belief it is contraindicated, and can lead to appreciable amount of rot. Especially between the lignified bark, and the Green cambium Layer. This was a Cause of much consternation for me in my first attempts. LOL, and like I said I thought I knew what I was doing. Better luck in your next go around. I am donating at least 300 cuttings to whoever is running our cutting giveaway in this coming dormant season. I am hoping that like @Fishinjunky you will achieve 100% success on your next go around.

Some of those are ones I lost as well. Don't feel to bad, it happens to everyone.

I’m actually very happy with the outcome. The rooting failures were mostly due to my inexperience in managing moisture, temperature, and light exposure. Starting late in May didn’t help either, given my climate with cool nights and hot days. Still, it was a good learning experience—and that’s how you get better at it.
