Ça sent le figuier

No, not a new variety and I'm sure this has probably been discussed before. Now that I have several large'ish leafed out cuttings in my attached garage, by wife has made the comment that it smells like cat pee now. We are a dog family if that matters. To me, it's a pleasant sweet smell more similar to toasted coconut than anything else.

I'm wondering if this is like Cilantro where it tastes like soap to some people or the "Asparagus Pee" gene that some people have. I've been keeping the door between the garage and house closed for now.

I guess it could also be certain varieties that are more prone to various distinct smells.

On a funny side note, Early last year I was researching inline exhaust systems for laser fumes This was before I even started my fig journey. YouTube was recommending various videos to me in the "grow room" vain because the setups were similar. In one of the videos the guy setup this exhaust system because he said his wife hated the smell of "figs." I always assumed he wasn't really talking about figs, but something else. A few weeks ago, I was watching a bunch of fig related videos and stumbled on DeanP's YT channel and it really was about figs the entire time.

Anyways, stay safe and warm the next few days if you are in the middle of this storm.

At first, when my collection started getting out of hand, lol ... I did smell the cat pee odor from them.

But anymore I do not.
Granted they are outside, but even being among them I do not notice it.
Same with my wife.
Though we have no pets, just not home enough for pets yet....but, we do have a 16 yr old daughter....does that count? lol

Haha. I imagine a teen aged girl has a very sharp nose and if it passes her test all is good.
My wife has mentioned cat pee smell too but I haven’t really noticed it. Fish fertilizer on the other hand…..😂
yeah. I'm not sure if I'll even use that outside since my trees will be so close to the house and patio. Nothing like the smell of bad pad thai when having a cup of coffee in the mornings.

Fig leaves smell similar to cat pee without the obnoxious ammonia. I guess you can try toasting coconut for a month and see if that can rewire her sensory memory.

Two of my daughters walked by my figs in the basement and complained about the smell of cat pee.
Some of the kids in my class smell cat pee and others think the figs smell great.
