Big mushroom

Hi! Yes, that is a Puffball. Ignore the mycophobes above! :ROFLMAO: This is a good mushroom. It is easy to identify and not easily confused with anything poisonous. They are commonly seen in yards in August after a rainy period. The one you have above looks as though it could be too old and past its prime. When you cut it open, it should be solid white. If you see yellowish color or darker, it is too old. Toss it into your yard. Next August after a soaking rain, keep an eye on the spot where you found this one. They normally return again every year in the same spot. If that is in your yard, you should consider if you treat your lawn with any chemicals before you consume it. Here is an old video on my YouTube channel I filmed many years ago: HERE

It looks like a puffball but... they really are supposed to be more white colored. It could be a giant toad stool. I have seen some that looked almost exactly like that.

Be aware of look-alikes:
Many poisonous mushrooms, especially those in the Amanita genus, can resemble young puffballs.
Cut the mushroom in half:
To verify if it's a true puffball, cut it open. If it's white inside and lacks internal structures like gills, it's likely safe to eat.
Avoid yellowing or browning flesh:
If the flesh is yellow, brown, or has any other coloration, it's not a true puffball and should be avoided.
Check for internal structures:
If you see gills or other internal structures, it is NOT a puffball and should not be consumed.

Shitakes grow nicely here and you know what you are eating (you have to inoculate the logs).
Morels are about the only ground dwelling wild mushroom I would care to eat in this area.
Mistaking an Aminita for a puffball could mean a liver transplant or worse.

I’ll buy the button mushrooms sometimes but mostly I get the portobello mushrooms.
