Can you grow bamboo in Toronto / Mississauga
Do you have to grow it in pots and put it in the garage during winter ?
Where do you buy it ?

I don't know the answers to those questions, but...make sure you research varieties.
Some are extremely invasive, some not so much.
Some get pretty thick while others stay quite thin.
Some grow much taller than others.
A lot to consider.

There are some varieties of bamboo that are cold hardy enough for to be grown in ground in Toronto. if you want small(<1 inch diameter culms, 8-15 ft tall Look at some of the Fargesia species. Most need at least partial shade. The Jiuzhaigaou varieties are colorful and very cold hardy(I have several of these).

You can also grow some of the mid and large timber bamboo Phylostachys bamboos. these are runners, some more than others, and need some kind of control. I control the spread with a trench around the grove. when the bamboo spreads the runners are shaloow and will be exposed as they try to cross the trench and once a year I use a shovel to cut and remove the runners taht are crossing the trench.

I often buy bamboo from Bamboo Garden Nursery. Their website has a lot of good information and you can search by hardiness aone to see what might work in your area.
