Arbutus Unedo "Strawberry Tree"

Last year, I came across this beautiful tree while walking around the zoo. It is so beautiful with its yellow to red fruit and red peeling bark. I found some overripe fruits on the floor and I tried to sprout them with little success. The ones that did getminate for me withered away.

Does anyone have experience with these trees?

I've had a dwarf version for about 10 years. I picked it up at a local nursery since I was looking for broadleaf evergreens. Its currently fighting for space/light with my oldest fig tree, an Olympian, that was planted a year or 2 later. Its been trouble-free in my climate and I haven't done anything other than prune it as it encroaches on my stairs and the Olympian. Its bigger than the advertised 6 feet(maybe 10ft?), but I also have flooplain soil that is naturally very fertile and most everything gets big.

Wow! That is very cool. Has it fruited for you? If so, how long did it take to fruit?

Yeah, Its fruiting right now. I don't remember when it started, but its been fruiting for at least a few years. Its one of those things that I walk right past several times a day but rarely actually look at it. I now recall that the fall/winter flowers was one of the main reasons i got it. the Anna's hummingbirds like to feed on it over the winter.
