Anyone Air-layer a Persimmon before?

@"Figology"#21 . Very interesting post, but has anyone who has tried to root a persimmon will tell you it's very difficult to do it.

I'm not surprised that even with a hundred cutting tries, Figology, our content master in disguise, soon found himself becoming wise, to the sadness persimmon Growers know, that the persimmon cuttings just don't grow.

I have never heard of anyone being as persistent on the subject as Figology. In CRFG meetings various members will tell you it's just about impossible to root them as cuttings. LOL Lord knows I have tried several times myself.

As to being successful with an air layer it's just got to work. I've never tried it myself. I just kept trying to root cuttings, over, and over again unsuccessfully.

I'll set an air-layer in the spring and see what happens.  I might be better off rooting seeds and grafting them.

@"Figology"#21 . It does seem strange that propagation of persimmons is so difficult. I have offered wondered how the commercial Growers do it. Your air layer absolutely should work. Your hundred cutting project should have had some success. Persimmons are just so dang difficult.

@"Figology"#21 OMG. It's very likely that it's going to have to be seeds either from your Fuyu, or some of the variety, and then grafted onto seed stock. I took a look as well at planting from seed, and that's going to be somewhat difficult as well. I was told at more than one CRFG exchange event that I would not be able to successfully root a cutting. LOL I thought for sure I could so I tried over a dozen, all failures. I'll be very interested in your air layer project. Please keep us updated.

I haven't even touched into the persimmon realm, too many other fruits and berries I've been messing with.
Maybe one of these days...but not this day!

@"Trustyfarms"#147 . Diospyros virginiana rootstock. So does this rootstock air layer? Does it propagate by cuttings. Since it's a root stock how can it be propagated? Persimmons are perplexing.

Rootstock is grown from seed and is 2 years old before I graft to it.  I’ve never tried to air layer or root it as seedling rootstock is widely available from conservation nurseries around the US.

You know to be honest, I don't believe I have even eaten a persimmon.
I have had persimmon wine though, and it was amazing...and I'm not a wine person.
Although I do wine at work when people do stupid things. lol

Just remember the term "bletting" I made the mistake of biting in to an unripe one when I was a kid. It was a few years later before I tried one again. :)

@"GoodFriendMike"#9    That is why I have never really been interested in them...I do remember trying one now that you say that.
Very astringent...was not my cup of tea. lol

But...I didn't know they sweeten up further into ripening.
