Another Freeze Watch

Bundle up. Winter's coming... It's been a bit cooler than usual but still not going to zero on the forecast... Fingers crossed. I have to recoup raccoon losses. I need a bit more time to at least bring in some more figs that are jam worthy.

Sorry to hear that. I’m just starting to enjoy the mild temps after a brutal summer. So far I built a shed and got rid of some extra gardening supplies and about 20 trees.

@"Figgerlickinggood"#7  @"TorontoJoe"#1 , and all of our cold winter weather members. I feel like I'm in A Game of Thrones episode LOL winter is coming. Please keep your fig trees warm this winter. It's also coming to Berkeley CA residents as well. Even my still vigorously growing first year trees are lingifying fast. Last winter my fig trees spent the cold months in my bedroom binge watching Netflix with me. Sadly they're all grown up now, and won't fit in my bedroom propagation Center table anymore.

Bad thing is, it's cooling down this week, like here we're looking at getting down to 32f one night.
Then climbing back up by the weekend.
Here is where the trees start getting confused. lol

I certainly am seeing a lot of my trees slowing down, and becoming lingified. What's in the greenhouse is in the greenhouse. They are the most recent up potted fig trees. The bigger girls are just going to have to get through the winter without the greenhouse. I have 30 fig pops that I am currently rooting on a heat Mat.

@"Figneer"#151. I know it can be very late in the season, but when in your area do fig trees go dormant, and how long does that dormancy last? I've heard from some Arizona members that it can be very late. Do some of your varieties ever go completely dormant? Also curious about your high heat summer weather. At the peak of the summer heat is it possible to keep your fig trees from burning? Even here in Berkeley CA. We have to water twice a day for our biggest trees. It's not even a matter of wet soil, it seems they literally have to drink to avoid burning.

My fig tree doesn’t go fully dormant until last week of December and 1st week of January when it loses all ots leafes and that when I prune it. The dormancy last barely 2 months, the tree starts to week up 1st or 2nd week of March so when I have cuttings to graft I do that the last week of February usually, sometimes the 1st week of March depending on buds swelling. All the grafted verities on the main tree go dormant at the same time however I planted a very small Panche tree couple years ago in ground and that one never goes dormant for some reason and the previous year leafs doesn't fall of until like May when the temps start getting above 100.
As far as watering goes, my experience been it doesn't really matter how much water you give the tree it will still get sunburn but the fig tree damage is not terrible. This past summer was brutal and we broke so many records especially for the length of high temps, so much so I almost got no figs this year except couple, the rest dried up on the tree before maturing, This coming year I am planning to double or triple my watering to see if it will help even though the experienced fig people say that fig trees don’t like to be soaked with water as I am desperate 😀
Every summer my fig tree and citrus trees get sunburned and this year I totally lost a 7 year old mature dwarf clementine.
I am not sure in your area how high the night temps gets in peak of summer but here it never goes bow 90-100 which take a toll on trees.
