Algerian Cheouti

We picked our first Algerian Cheouti today after noticing it was dripping honey today from a 2-yr old tree in an 8-gallon pot. (Sorry for the blurry photo from my hubby—I’m not able to go into the fig patch because I’ve hurt my foot and need to keep the stitches clean.)

Like a Smith, it was ugly on the outside but beautiful on the inside. Unlike a Smith, the flavor was a soft raspberry with a touch of tartness whereas the Smith tastes like pure strawberry to me.

This ripened in less than ideal conditions—cloudy, cold and intermittent rain for over a week. There was some splitting from the eye.

Just look at those pools of honey!

Texture was more cake batter than jammy or dense with moderate seed crunch.

Very happy to have this tree!

Dang Nina that's a looker!
I haven't tried that one, lots of people saying it's so close to Smith, and I have 4 Smith trees. :)

Thanks everyone! To be honest, I was expecting it to be another Smith (which I love so wouldn’t mind). But this is different. I look forward to checking it again—I have a lot of figs still on the tree, and it seemed to have a short hang time (hard & green to ripe under 4 days).

I hope it ripens earlier as matures. My 1st Smith of the season was picked August 28th so that’s a whole month more of eating yummy figs!

That's good news, maybe I will give it a try at some point.
After my downsizing is complete. lol

I'm TorontoJoe and I approve this fig!  :D

I want to re-impose the moderator tax but I really don't want to share with Kevin, Mike and Eric..  :P

I had like four or five shoots from this spring. I was gonna bury the limbs into the ground. It's my new technique, just create a monster root system, but I can definitely spare a couple limbs. Someone said they call the technique 'Subterranean Cordons'

I got mine from Bass as Algerian Chetoui, I think it's Smith, but I don't grow Smith, so what do I know?  I grafted a limb once and the leaves were different in a way.
