Air Layering question…

Ok… So I set an air layer on my I258 tree today. It’s got no fruit on it or developing fruit so I’m not worried about that. I think this one should be alright. Has branches up top and branches below the AL. When the time comes, I’ll snip it and hopefully everyone is happy and I don’t kill both halves. lol.

The second pic is of my JHA just about as tall and all that… But there’s no branching or really anything happening, except the one breba it decided to pop out about 1/3 of the way up. The JHA has a bunch of figs coming, and a fair amount already there just hanging out waiting to get ripe. Ideally I’d set an AL about where that trellis wire is roughly 36 inches from the ground…. BUT since there’s nothing really happening in that area would that kill the bottom half? I’d like for that NOT to happen. I’m a little more nervous about setting on in the middle of this tree….

What would yall do? They’re both like 8 ft tall.

if a bare standard is left with good roots after you remove the AL it should sprout more branches and you can pinch/rub off the ones you do not want to form new tree .
Awesome, that’s what I was hoping for. But never done one like this yet lol. This seems risky for me.

You’ll be better off using a larger container for the second air layer if you want to ensure all growth above remains healthy once cut. I’ve used up to 3-gallon pots for large air layers in the past. You just have to build a platform for it to sit on and then tie it to your trellis wire to keep it stable.

I’ll have to rig up something lmao. I’ll figure something out. I was kind of thinking that with the first one. But I was already too far gone at that point lol.

Going back and forth on this question. Should I air layer or cut and stick green wood cuttings. I’d like to prune my Sicilian 33 without loosing the growth.

Air layer for sure, green cuttings tend to have higher failure rate while air layers are around 99% when done correctly.

Yea I would air layer for sure if you’re going to prune it anyway and want to save it.

Yea I was only debating rooting green cuttings because if I just cut them I’d have an extra month for branching and fruiting to occur.
