A little help from nature

Well now, I have been saying for a few years that I am getting rid of my Bing and Stella cherry trees, they don't grow well and don't bloom at the same time for pollination.

The Bing last year had a nice growth spurt, eh..

So the Beaver that lives in the pond decided he needed a midnight snack and took down the Bing tree...it's gone.
Probably part of his den now and a snack.

Looks like any trees I want to grow near the water have to be protected from it.
Down near the shore line in 2 make shift cages are 2 Paw Paw trees I have planted.
They are about 1 to 2 ft tall, gotta beef up security, I'm putting in two more and a Montmorency Cherry.
Stella is coming out this weekend.

I guess, I can thank you Beaver for the motivation to get started on all this work. lol
And it's beautiful out today....only noon and I have finished an oil change on my truck and getting ready to start some seeds and cuttings.

A blessed day fo sho! :)

It’s amazing how they select the trees to gnaw on and take down. On a local trail I hike on, beavers will bypass smaller 4-6” diameter trees right on the waterline and go for the 10+” diameter trees 20’ from the waterline.
Okay darnit...Just like you're saying there...we just found this one today, all the way up in my yard a 20' Pear tree, he cut it down and took most of it!

Also the 2 small pines behind it.

This is a whole new war!! Gah!

Besides a beaver, do you have any bass in the pond?
I would never get any work done if I had a nice pond like yours. I would be fishing
Have you ever checked out this YouTube channel called BamaBass? They’re in Alabama, he built a five acre pond on his property and filled it with bass and other fish. I’ve watched it from beginning to end, it’s really really good. @ktrain you would love it too.

There is indeed, Bass, Crappy, Brim (blue gill) and some catfish, but have never caught one...they seem to not be interested in any bait I use. lol
I wish I could spend ever day out there, but it doesn't pay the bills. Gah!

Up at my father in law's place the beavers were taking out loads of birch's along the shoreline. We wrapped 2-3 layers of chicken wire around the base of the trees maybe hip high. It did the trick.

I like to get in the canoe and race them across the lake. Sometimes I win :)

We have a lot of beavers up here. They eat the soft bark but they are quite selective. I think they take the desired size for their dams and logdes. 10" is big though. Do they move them after bringing them down?

@ktrain, have you tried live minnows? They usually work pretty good.
I have tried everything under the sun except my first born. lol
I have even left bait in the water for a week.
The turtles will mess with it but the catfish....not.
I know there is a very nice size one in there because I watched it swim along the shore line one day.
I figure is has plenty to eat and isn't interested.
Tons of minnows and frogs in there....I just gave up.

I was thinking the same, either chicken wire or hardware cloth.
Honestly I didn't think with the 1000's of trees surrounding the pond, that it would come up by the house and get my fruit trees.
Pretty far from the water to drag them off.

Makes me wonder 🤔 if you had an inground pool near your house would they try to build a dam in it.
