A Late Start

I may be a little late getting to the party starting my cuttings this year, but if felt so cold for so long that I didn’t feel it was the right time to start til now.

As per usual, I gathered more cuttings than I told myself all last year that I would get, but as I keep telling myself I never know how many (if any!) will actually make it through the rooting process, so it’s perfectly justified for now!

You are making great time for starting cuttings. I find that when I start cuttings later they can become healthier fig trees because I don't have to manage them as much or have a nice setup. It's practically carefree if you start them later or outside around May because the temperature and humidity is perfect. No fungus gnats, no worrying about the temperature, and worrying about acclimation is decreased. I'm just east of Baltimore county.

Don't think there is a time you can't start figs. I took green cuttings and rooted some last year in June or July I think. Not many things will do that.

I didn’t have enough room for starting all my cuttings at once so I am processing in batches. Like an assembly line, lol. New cuttings in bin on heat mat under cover, then moved to bin with heat mat and grow light, then potted in 1 gal pot and moved down the line to just grow light to help with any up potting shock, then moved to greenhouse. Hubby is so sweet and tolerating of the invasion to the computer/music room - although it started testing everyone’s limits when one of the new variety’s leaves started smelling like cat urine….

I didn't tell my wife that fig trees sometimes smell like cat pee. She would have wanted the trees outside. Instead the cats took all the blame. 🤣

Remember Fig Leaf Tea this season! I feel that the leaves with the most cat pee scent make for some of the best flavor once the leaves are dry!
I don’t know why it works that way but my Moscatel Preto leaves are PUNGENT when fresh, but once they dry out they smell absolutely Devine and made great tasting tea!
