Fall and winter projects

Ok, its that time of year again! The seasons are changing. With the figs winding down (in the northern hemisphere) what are your projects for the coming months?

Im going to be improving my irrigation system and doing some serious pruning on the trees, branch shaping, and ill try my hand at cuttings again.

How about you all?

Land clearing time. Hoping to get enough of the field cleared I can plant some trees this coming year along with much more grafts, etc. Took both daughters out there today. They each had their first taste of persimmons and both girls eyes got big with a wow! Tasty. I kept waiting for them to try grabbing one that wasn’t ready yet but they never did….lol

Think this year. I am going to spray my trees when dormant. With a mixture of Neem and Pyrethrin. Lost many to beetles. Never had that issue with figs before. Besides that. Root a 100 or so cuttings. Try and keep all my seedlings alive. And try and get back to the books. Been slacking on that part for awhile now.

I'm Still Not done with this Season ripening!!!

Currently, Setting up a solar water panel to produce some heat over winter to temper the Greenhouse.

Over winter, -Mix up soil so it's ready for root pruning and uppotting at Spring breakout.
-Probably put up a couple more trellis wires for the potted trees.
-Go over the irrigation equipment, probably send out the Fert. injectors for service.
-Root some babies in the basement. I told myself to hold off till January, but I've already started a few. I just need something green in my life EVERY month of the year.

Never forget what the great Winston Churchill (probably) secretly wrote about figs!!!!! In cold climates, make this your mantra!

We shall grow on to the end without fear
We shall fight in the orchard,
we shall fight with 5-gallon buckets and planters,
we shall fight with 10-10-10... and with growing strength in the air(layer), we shall defend our figs, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight in the garden,
we shall fight on the urban balconies,
we shall fight in the fields and in the hills,
we shall fight in the Italian guys back yard (Because he makes great capicollo)
We shall never surrender..... and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this fig orchard, or a large part of it were subjugated and frozen, then our fig-empire beyond the seas (or slightly to the south), armed and guarded by Fig Fanatics, would carry on the struggle until, in good time, the growers in the sub-tropics with all their power and might, step forth and bequeath fig cuttings to all in the cold north

Never give up!!!! I plan on eating fresh figs in November :D

That's the spirit Joe. You let old man winter know you mean business. You know I honestly believe you could have a few fig trees go year round, it would just cost a lot of Canadian dollars to do it.

Let's see if figgyed can make it cheaper

@figologist has an indoor Greenhouse Angelito that is deserving of mention. LOL Looks like an expensive Greenhouse to me. I oomitted his video on the subject because he should include it when he's ready to post it.

My fall project is to bring 30 amps of electricity to a new sub panel in my shed which is next to my fig tree's. With the extra electricity I plan to power upto three 1500w heaters plus the ventilation system for my new 10' x 15' greenhouse I will put up in the spring. I am mostly done with the install of the small parts like sub panel, receptacles and breakers. The last and hardest part is the 140' of conduit and electrical wire from the house to the shed to bury.

Thank God nothing for me to do this fall. I fixed my irrigation problem last year which proved successful of getting nice ripe figs so I am waiting for early Jan to:

- Cull few verities proven too “wimpy” to handle our scorching summer 😀
- contemplating doing very light pruning to test if I can make the ripping earlier to avoid the couple late verities getting burned in excessive heat
- The most fun task is to graft new verities - this off course will be done late Feb or early March depending on tree waking up

Will you also be having any cuttings contest this year?
