Coll de Dama Mutante

Figgin' A

My first CDD Mutante. Any CDD, for that matter. I was hoping it wouldn't impress me, as I have way too many trees already, but WOW... really... WOW. Thick jammy texture, strong berry flavor, some acidity, good sweetness, thick, chewy, and very tasty skin. The interior color is gorgeous ruby red. And these are the first figs from a small tree that I rooted in February. Despite yesterday's heavy rain, no splitting whatsoever. I am impressed.

That is some very tasty fig . I have heard that the texture of the CCD family of figs are thick and jammy . Can’t wait now .

Wow! I've grown a few CDD but that's more impressive than any I've had.... May I ask the maturity of the tree and if this one got your super-duper early head start? All CDD's have been pretty late for me

I received a cutting from Harvey on March 3rd or 4th and placed it in soil to root the following day. It's pretty impressive how fast this one rooted, set figs, and properly ripened them.

Cutting in early March to that today!?!? That's excellent. I think Green Goblin took 5 or 6 weeks longer and I thought that was super impressive..... Well done!

I rooted three other CDD varieties this year, and they are quite behind this one. I hope this is not a fluke, but rather an indication of consistently earlier ripening in the years to come.

That’s a beautiful fruit!
I’m just wondering if your fig could possibly be from a reversed branch rather than a true Coll de Dama Mutante.
The fruit color doesn’t quite look like a typical Mutante. Normally, CDD Mutante starts out green, then as it swells and ripens it begins to change color with very striking stripes. Here’s a photo of a fully ripe CDD Mutante from my tree for comparison.

Regarding the reverse issue with CDD Mutante, I remember Eric mentioned having this situation on his tree a few years ago. Have you seen something similar before, or is this the first time you’ve noticed it?

I noticed that as well. Most likely you are correct, or maybe it’s because the tree is so young and figs will look different next year. I’ve had that happen with some varieties where initial or even all first year figs looked wonky. I hope it shows proper colors next year.

I have had little luck attempting to propagate this variety. I've tried a few times unsuccessfully. I finally took matters into my own hands, and purchased a tree this spring from @Bigbill of OTBP Nursery. It arrived in glowing health. and recently was up potted to a 7 gallon square. Looks like it will have some cuttings for me this winter. I highly recommend this Nursery.
