Winter is coming to the Southeast

What to do, what to do! We are going to have two nights down into the 20's and then back into the 40's. Mine are also bleeding sap. Think I just decided to put all 10 large potted trees into their room in the barn. Then I have 10 baby trees started this year. In the barn or into the house?

It sure was nice for the freeze to hold off till I got home from vacation today. Right now the temperature is 31°F and dropping. It was 32 at 7:00pm. Put my 3 containers in the laundry room and thinking about starting to wrap my ingrounds tomorrow.

I'm glad you have some time. The cold came on very quickly here. Now I'm really struggling to get it all done and away.

It's 27 right now. I should be grateful for that number as we have had lows in the high teens in the past. Typically those temps are in January or early February. I am pretty sure a record has been broken to have such a hard freeze before Thanksgiving.

Just make some carts to move them around if possible for your area and storage needs.

To a smaller extent, I have a back issue, so I got 2 carts (like AV carts in a school). So when the weather did some freezing dips, I loaded up my green baby figs onto the carts and just wheeled them into the garage at night and out during the day. It literally took 2 mins and no effort.

About an 1.5” over here in WNC. Lots of people were stuck on I-40 and I-26 due to accidents caused by slick roads.

I got the ingrounds wrapped this morning. All 6 trees. I had to do them by myself though because my husband’s busy with customers his first day since our vacation. He got the supplies out of the shed for me, that was a help. The wind started about 15 minutes before I went outside and it intensified while I was wrapping. I was using burlap. Try to go round and round the trunk with gusts up to 30 mph blowing it out of your hands. I finally got it done. So for now it’s just the burlap but at least the wind isn’t hitting the trunks. There’s no rain for awhile which gives me a chance to finish the rest. I want to use tarps but my husband wants tarpaper.

Hit about 24 as a low here. I did absolutely nothing to prepare the figs. Everything is dormant now and most apical buds look fine. No frizzle fried ends or mass die-offs. This is perfect since now they can go into storage without issue. It got pretty close to disastrous!

Hopefully everyone else had a standard season ending frost without detrimental affects.

It was 20.3f here last night. Ouch! Potted trees are inside and protected. It was pretty brutal getting them all in as the temps were dropping. Teresa you are a hardcore trooper wrapping by yourself like that! That's some true fig love right there

It still amazes me that so many of you in the SE have your trees go dormant the same time as mine. My in ground trees are still bright green. Potted trees still mostly have their leaves on.

I took this pic today

What always amazes me is when I hear people in Texas and Louisiana say they move potted trees inside for the winter

I don't get it... but I've never lived there. I did travel to Houston a few years back. there was snow on the ground..... for about 7 minutes. Then by noon it was shorts weather. I def need to spend some time in the south to fully appreciate the fig growing experience there :D
