What is the flavor profile of LdA types?

I’ve been chasing LdA varieties for years - I’ve killed plenty of cuttings, and when I got an air layer while I was still in Texas it turned out to be what was more than likely a Brunswick instead.

Moved to Maryland almost 3 years ago now and restarted my collection, killed a handful of Perretta cuttings and finally had my Pellegrino cutting (that I thought I had killed last year) grow healthfully this year.

I also bought a Randino this year that grew like a beast and set a few figs (that the squirrels got 😡)

I’ve heard many say that LdA is a berry fig or maybe honey/berry. Randino, though, is supposed to be more of a sugar fig, yet some lump it together with other LdA types.

Anyone have experience that can enlighten on whether they’re more berry or just syrupy-sweet?

Hi @lkibahd! I’m so glad you added your signature line—I had no idea you were in the Baltimore area. I’m about an hour north of Baltimore. Do you go to Jimmy’s DMV events? I’d be happy to help if you need any cuttings to help restart your collection.

I have a 1st year Randino too that also grew like a beast, but didn’t ripen fruit.

I was able to eat ripe fruit off a 2-yr old Nordland, and my tasting notes said it was sweet and mildly figgy. I didn’t taste any berry notes.

I haven’t been to the DMV events yet but I intend to next year! I’m supposed to be being careful about adding new plants per the wife since I’m already up to roughly 45 😬

Probably wise. My hubby is fond of saying “Happy wife, happy life.” Jimmy’s get togethers are great—well-organized and well-attended by friendly folk. I’ve also seen @DCallahan and @Gladstone1969 there.

I’ve got more trees than you…around 175. My endlessly tolerant hubby and I are on day 2 of loading them in the garage. You really need your spouse’s support in this hobby.

Mine is the same strain as Ross. I would describe a better than average production. Larger than average fig size. Light berry flavour. Very substantial and forgiving fig variety

I have LdA and Pellegrino, very very similar.
Fig size, shape, flavor....I agree with Joe on the flavor profile.
Thought I got rid of Pellegrino but I seen it last night when pulling in trees.
Its funny how you find one you forgot you had or still had until you start moving them around.
