I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all the willingness to share figs, knowledge and experience on the forum. You have helped me more than you will ever realize. Y’all are quickly becoming extended family in my eyes. I hope new members continue to get the same treatment and take full advantage of the resources available. Special thanks to @GoodFriendMike for answering my questions and never making me feel bad for not knowing.

I wholeheartedly agree. I've been overwhelmed with people's generosity and the kindness they have shown to those of us who are just getting started.
I'm looking forward to next year when I hopefully will have more to offer and cuttings to donate.

Me too! I feel so lucky to be able to ask my rookie questions among friends who no matter how long they have been doing this are so willing to help with my newbie questions and never make me feel silly. I also love to give back so I can't wait till I can be one of you awesome generous folks. It's so telling and speaks to the character of the group that a Friday night post is a brain storm about how to get figs and the love of growing into the hands of kids through 4h and elementary school projects... My gosh you guys. I'm so lucky I found you!!!!

The fig community is filled with very good people. As with everything you have a few bad apple's. But with fig's they are a very small percentage. I as I see others do as well. Treat members as fig lovers. Not as knowing less or more. Thank you for the shout out. :)

As you know, I had a rocky start in figs- being yelled at for contacting “collectors” to ask a question, when I didn’t know that was such a thing; being ripped off a few times when I first tried to buy my first baby trees; being told I couldn’t buy a fig unless I went on a date with someone (yeah, that was a weird one), etc.

Then someone suggested that I join this group, and since then, it’s been so awesome.

Experienced fig people here are helpful and encouraging to newbies like me, not dismissive or annoyed by our newbie questions, and actually engage with us.

I very much appreciate your experience and willingness to help. It’s hard being at the bottom of the pile again, and you all encourage the joy in talking about different varieties and growing them.

This forum is a unique and wonderful way to encourage the love of figs and of community, which I very much value. And I have been so fortunate to have started some lovely friendships in the short time I have been here.

I appreciate you all and the efforts that you put into making this a fun, helpful, and vibrant community!

Many collectors on this forum that are happy to answer questions. Without yelling. :)

I'm sorry to hear about the misfortunes you suffered along the way, and...I love to hear that you have found a new home here with us fig junkies. lol
It's people like the ones in this community (all of us) that help make this hobby awesome!

Glad you're here :)

I love the warm welcome one receives on this forum. As a relatively new fig growers/collector, I’m finding great wealth of information and help on this site! I love how everyone is respectful and so supportive and generous! I’m thankful to be part of this unique group and hope to be able to contribute and help make this forum the best fig community! Cheers

Sorry to hear of your troubles.
I'm curious to who was doing the yelling? And what platform that was tolerated on?

I received a message (on fb messenger) from Scarlett’s Hph Nlr, who said that she was an admin of a fig group that I don’t belong to, but that I had talked to a collector that was in her exclusive fig group, and that I should stop, and I should never talk to a collector since a collector has so many varieties that they would never be interested in anything I might have or ever want to sell to me.

I asked her what group she was the admin of, but she wouldn’t tell me since she said that I could never join. (I didn’t want to join, I was just trying to figure out what was happening.)

I apologized and said I was brand new to figs and how could I tell someone was a collector, so I would know not to bother them. No answer, she just said those people had over 100 varieties, and I should not talk to any collectors. She then chewed me out over numerous, numerous texts about the whole thing.

Then a little later, it happened again, but with someone else in her group!

She saw that I was talking to a different person on a fig forum (not her forum), but who was also a member of her group, so she messaged to chew me out again!

I said that the member and I were having a nice interactive conversation, so was I suppose to just stop talking to that person and not reply to that person’s texts?

It was really an ugly thing, and she went on and on, really being horrible to me, and honestly I still don’t quite understand why. And I’m not a sensitive person that way, but I did feel really bad and unwelcome in the new hobby.

Personally, if someone contacted me that I didn’t want to talk to, I just wouldn’t reply, or I would say, I’m not trading or selling fig trees. I wouldn’t sic the mod from another group on them, although I don’t think the second person did that.

Being in the fig community can bring ups and downs. I myself had quite a few downs this last year, and almost left completely a few times. But it was the years of community feel prior to that which kept me going and the decent people who messaged me privately. As Mike said, there are a handful of bad apples, no doubt, but many are nice people and I appreciate them very much.

I agree, GFM is a nice guy and very helpful. At least so far. Hahaha 😜

Well, I for one, am grateful you stuck around. I like to read your posts and appreciate your experience and perspective.

Hmm? At least so far? If it keeps getting cold. I may not be helpful at all might need to hibernate :)
