Did you see the Northern Lights last night, because
Holy Mahatma Ghandi, I just tried my first Adriatic last night, and it was eye opening!!!

NOW I finally get what you mean by tastes like strawberry jam!

Another Adriatic fan is born!! ⭐
Actually 2, my younger previously non-fig eating daughter really likes it, too! ⭐⭐

It was Teramo, which I didn’t think would taste that great, since they say baby figs don’t taste great their first year + all the leaves fell off, so it is just a few figs hanging on, but it exceeded any expectations and was GREAT!!!

Now I want more Adriatics!! They are AH-MAZING!!!

So, here in 6b (don’t believe the powers that be that changed it to 7a), Adriatics are on the late side, and I’m wondering when do you take your Adriatics out from winter storage to give them a headstart?

And what do you do for a headstart?

Is the warmth of putting them inside the house enough to get them out of dormancy + lights or outside fig shuffle when they have leaves?

This is my first winter, and Adriatics are going onto my cuttings sale WL.

Do you know if any Adriatics are earlier than others?

I read that they all taste the same, but that certainly can’t be true, right, or we wouldn’t have so many varieties.

Which ones are your favorites and why?

I don’t believe Teramo is an Adriatic fig. I don’t have that one but I thought it’s more of a sugar fig. It might taste more berry like because it didn’t ripen that well, so the sweetness is muted.

For me all the Adriatics taste pretty similar to each other. I would go for something like Green Ischia or AJH. They are cheap and easily available. They are late, but ripen well in cooler weather. White Madeira 1 is also a good one. Many people thinks it’s better than other Adriatics. I’m not sure how this one is ripening in cooler weather.

Another category is Adriatic adjacent like Green Michurinska, GMdL, HSK Unk. There are other ones too but those are rarer and harder to find. These are sweeter and earlier.

I had a Teramo long ago but haven't grown it recently after my move. I don't think it is lumped into the Adriatic family, but it is a decent fig to grow in the NE for its productivity, cold hardiness and early ripening(or SW for its ability to stand up to the heat).

WM1 comes to mind if I want to grow an Adriatic in the NE. Prosciutto is not far from it. Both were discovered in the NE if I remember correctly. I haven't grown both long enough to say which one is better or earlier. I also have Green Ischia and JHA. At the moment, I like WM1 better because it is more mature than the Prosciutto, so fruits are bigger and more consistent. Given the progression of Prosciutto, it won't surprise me if the two ends up a tie down the road.

I wouldn't be surprised if they all end up tasting super similar at the end of the day.

Isn't Teramo very similar to Campaniere? I thought it was a honey fig.
Campaniere is way better I think.Teramo is more of a sugar fig. I should say that I don’t have Teramo but it seems smaller and not as tasty as Campaniere. Campaniere is very good and more complex berry if picked at the right time

Thank you for the suggestions - I just looked up HSK Unk, and it sounds perfect for my growing conditions! and I even saw a comment that it is doing well for someone in zn 5! I will have to try to find a source.

I have a tiny little cutting of Green Michurinska, but it’s only half the width of a pencil, so is pretty iffy. And White Madeira #1 is definitely on my list.

Thank you, Unk Prosciutto and White Madeira #1 are on my list, so it’s awesome to have experiences fig people sharing such good feedback on them.

Man, the Teramo was so good, so I can’t even imagine what the Unk Prosciutto or WM1 will taste like!!

Just picked today … my last of 3 WM#1 from my potted first year tree.
It was out of this world- jammy thick, light seed crunch, and candy sweet! I’ve never experienced anything like that before. The previous 2 I’ve tried were good but not as intense as the last one I just had! :giggle:

Awesome. 😎

I grew Teramo a few years ago. Teramo and Adriatic-type figs, to me, have a night and day difference in taste/flavor. I think you will be in for a real treat when you try a real Adriatic fig. In my zone (6b) with a short growing season, Adriatics require a headstart, but it's well worth it to me. In fact, most of my figs now are mid to late ripening varieties, which replaced most of the fig varieties I started off with based on recommendations for my climate.

Oops, it was an Atreano, not a Teramo!
Is an Atreano an Adriatic?

It was just like strawberry jam, even with the crunch, which was very nice and the first time trying a fig with a seedy crunch.
If you like Atreano, you should look into growing Doctor Gowaty. I think it is an Atreano type and has large figs. I don't know if it's cold hardy or late. I have a 1st year Dr Gowaty but have not tasted a ripe one yet. @2Angels likes the good doctor very much. She would be able to give you better info on it than I can

Atreano is not an Adriatic, but is its own family type. Thermalito is an Atreano type fig. It’s one that when pollinated becomes more like an Adriatic, but not pollinated can be more of a honey berry fig.
