Up potted a few

Up potted my Smith cutting and GXY/Yanonali today. The Smith kept falling over so it was time. Hopefully the apical bud straightens back out, it’s about 4 ft tall. Root ball could’ve been better, but was tired of picking it up for the last 3 days with all this wind. The GXY just needed a bigger put, but it had a decent root ball. That’s the last pic.

Some have even earned some name tags today! lol. Figured if they’ve made it this far, they’re going to make it. Smith, Bourjasotte Grise, Stella, Big Green Fig (from my dad’s neighborhood,) GXY, & Excel!

Running out of bigger pots and am out of good soil now.

Looking good! It always feels good to get them beyond their "baby stage", doesn't it? And that always seems to be an ongoing dilemma...not enough potting mix and not enough pots, especially of the right size you need.:ROFLMAO:

Awesome! That’s about when I like to up pot mine. If I let them to get even a little root bound they stall. The best explosive growth is when I up pot early.

Haha yea, I have some pots, but I’ve killed too many cuttings this year by giving them too much water. So I’m nervous about up potting things until like the very last minute. I feel like when they keep falling over is a pretty good time. I was having to water the smith cutting 2X a day to keep the soil moist. It’s been crazy hot here and I guess it’s just using a bunch of the water. It was the only one getting continuously dry throughout the day, all of the others were fine. It was weird.

I’m not sure if this is considered early or not, but it kept falling over so I figured it was time.

What you have in the first picture is what most people would consider too early.
Good to know lol. Well if it just hangs out for a bit I won’t be mad. That thing was going nuts. About getting to the point of getting tipped here soon. Can’t have it getting taller than I am now.

Most of our mix are light unless you use a mineral base mix. To deal with wind, up potting is usually not enough. Either put more weight on (I used to put bricks on the pot) or tie it to something to secure it. Also, some pots with wider top and narrower bottom tend to flip first in the wind. I have one that wins the flipping contest until I wedge it with 4 heavy pots.

When it is ready to up pot, you won't see too much soil falling off when you pat the rootball.

Well I placed it by my trellis wire also. So that should help with it being too heavy. We shall see how this plays out.
